You are what you eat – I suppose each of us heard this slogan before. However, not many take it seriously. Others seem to think if they eat tasty dishes in quality restaurants or buy organic products, they eat healthily, and they should be in impeccable condition, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Restaurants often serve processed food, products that have been deep-frozen and then heated in a microwave. Not many people consider or even know about this and the market for many organic products is not completely systematized.
The problem is what we eat is often random and it doesn’t sit well with our bodies. It’s not just about maintaining the right balance between carbohydrates, protein, and fat. If we want to provide the body with energy, all the necessary elements, and make the skin look healthy and young we need much more.
– To nourish the cells and microcirculation we need Nitric Oxide (NO), Hydrogen Sulphide (H2s) gases, three amino acids – arginine, tyrosine, and tryptophan, three vitamins: B9, B12, B6, and some metals like zinc, selenium, and iron. The skin also depends on nutrition, the gut quality, microbiota but mainly on the microcirculation – explained Dr. Claude Dalle during the AMWC Congress in Taiwan last month. – To improve microcirculation, strictly related to vitamin B9, we cannot forget in our diet free range eggs, spinach, turnip greens, asparagus, garlic, raw nuts, fruits like kiwi grapefruit, grapes, peaches, blacked-eyed peas, turmeric, broccoli, organic brown rice and exercise- he added.
The gases mentioned, such as Nitric Oxide (NO), are produced by the body and affect the relaxation of blood vessels and an increase in blood flow. Thanks to these gases, the cells are supplied with better oxygen. Others, like H2s, are produced in small amounts by the body and are responsible for cellular metabolism, and possibly have anti-inflammatory effects.
Amino acids are of great importance in the synthesis of collagen, they regulate the work of cells and the nervous system. The greatest amounts of arginine are found in dairy products, walnuts, and fish, tyrosine in dairy products, meat, eggs, and green vegetables, also tryptophan mainly in meat, fish, bananas, and parmesan cheese.
Thyroid gland determines the skin appearance
Tyrosine also has a positive effect on the thyroid gland and as experts are convinced, there is no healthy and attractive-looking skin without a healthy thyroid gland.
– When you want to look after your skin, you need to treat it at the same time with Vitamin C, vitamin A and thyroid hormones. You also need to control thyroid hormones, because it is the same family receptors of all – said Dr Dalle. – Vitamin A supplementation improves thyroid functions and regulates the activation of cortisol that stresses cells in the skin. When you have stress you need a lot of vitamin A – he explained during the AMWC Asia Congress.
A great amount of vitamin A can be found in red peppers, pumpkin, papaya, carrots, oranges, grapefruits, sweet potatoes, and spinach.
The most important metals of the anti-aging point of view, have an influence on the production of growth hormones which support the synthesis of proteins, help to remove free radicals, and improve the condition of the skin. So we should not forget about salmon, mackerel, cod, tuna, beef, turkey, seafood, cheese, eggs, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, garlic, and wheat in our diet.
What is most important for healthy young-looking skin? As crazy as it sounds – it is to provide the body with each of the above-mentioned products daily. Even small amounts! In addition, acidic products must be balanced with alkaline. So if we eat large amounts of meat, dairy or fish, we also need to supply with large amounts of vegetables and fruit every day.
What else is important for health and good-looking skin? Avoiding microwave meals that kill all the protein and make even the best wholesome meal mineral deficient.
Burgers and pies as harmful as cigarettes
We should take care of the consumption of industrial trans-fats in the diet as well.- Trans fat like burgers, french fries, pizza, popcorn, cakes, and pies are harmful for the skin – states doctor Claude Dalle – two percent of trans- fats in food is like 10 cigarettes a day – he warned.
Trans-fats are formed in the process of enriching vegetable oil with hydrogen molecules and subjecting them to high temperatures. They have a negative effect on the heart and block the blood vessels. Products rich in industrial trans-fats are not only those that can be found in oils that are used many times in restaurants but also products with a longer shelf life.
It is extremely difficult to change culinary and social habits. If we are used to eating out in a pub or restaurant, why should we suddenly give it up? Nobody talks about this, but we should pay attention to what and how we eat. Only then will we stay healthy and the skin will remain younger for years to come.
